General Press Release

The film Hell’s Pavement, thanks to a grant from the UK film council is currently being screened at five venues throughout the UK. It has already been shown in Canterbury, Kent and will be showing in Bristol, Shrewsbury and at two other locations in the future.

The film is based entirely on the Kent production team’s personal experiences of working with the public, private and voluntary care sectors. Directed by Andy Kemp and starring Pauline McLynn (Shameless, Angela’s Ashes, Father Ted), Connor Byrne (London’s Burning, Tracy Beaker) and Diveen Henry (London River, Grow Your Own) and introducing Keeki Bennetts; the film tells the story of five years in the life of eleven year old Aimee who is removed from the care of her own mother by well meaning professionals in an attempt to protect her from further neglect and abuse. From Aimee’s first encounter with the social care system through a range of foster placements, and ending in a haunting climax; Hell’s Pavement prompts us to ask the question “How is it that so many good intentions can result in such irreparable damage?”

Having been shown at the Glasgow Film Festival and the World fostering Conference in Dublin in 2009, where it was compared to “Cathy Come Home”, Hell’s Pavement established the universality of its theme at its American Premier at the Beloit International Film Festival which screened over 140 films from 22 countries. During the festival Hell’s Pavement received a total of three awards; the directors pick “Josh Burton Special Merit Award”, the “Ken Hendricks People’s Award” and an “Emerging Filmmakers Award”.

A heartbreaking, topical, and professionally challenging story of the life of a child in foster care.
