Press release – 21 September 2006
Park Entertainment and Intense Productions are delighted to announce that principal photography has been completed on ‘Underground ' an exciting new independent British action feature film.
In the UK suburbs, an underground tournament is set to challenge twelve fighters from different backgrounds to compete for the prize of £500,000. They have been handpicked for a no-holds barred competition that will push each fighter to their limit. Each fighter has his or her own reason for competing, and each will give everything to take the prize...but there can be only one winner...
Writer, director, producer Chee Keong Cheung has assembled some of the UK 's most prolific and talented martial arts and action talent including Mark Strange (a former National Chinese Full Contact Champion), Leon Sua (whose stunt credits include the last three James Bond films and ‘Batman Begins') and Nathan Lewis (three time World Kickboxing Champion and Shadow Warrior in ‘Batman Begins').
Chee Keong Cheung studied Film and Video at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design before forming Intense Productions in 1999. Intense is a critically acclaimed UK production and facilities company based in Lancashire . It has developed, produced, consulted, advised and provided production services for over fifty productions. Chee's recent credits include the critically acclaimed short film ‘Crashing the Wake '; award-winning music video ‘Young & Foolish ' featuring British singing sensation Corinne Bailey-Rae; the action adventure film ‘Displaced '; and the feature film drama ‘Sabina ',which is executive produced by Martin Scorsese with Academy Award winning cinematographer Jack Cardiff OBE on board as creative consultant.
Fellow Producer and actor Mark Strange has practiced and taught Kung Fu for 20 years, represented Britain in the World Chin Wu Championships and has won the National Chinese Full Contact Championship. Mark turned to acting and film production in the late 90 's and has worked with Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen in Hong Kong and on Warner Brothers blockbuster ‘Batman Begins '.
Executive Producer Mike Leeder was born and raised in the UK but has been based in Hong Kong since 1990. In addition to serving
as the Far Eastern Editor of Impact magazine, he continues to contribute to such magazines as ‘Black Belt ',‘Inside Kung Fu ' and ‘Femme Fatales ' which cover the Asian movie scene. He has worked both in front and behind the camera on a number of films and documentaries in Hong Kong & Asia, including ‘David Carradine: A Martial Arts Journey '; Sony's ‘The Art Of Action: Martial Arts In The Movies ' and most recently Jet Li 's martial arts epic ‘Fearless '. He is about to start working on Brett Ratner 's ‘Rush Hour 3 '.
Director Chee Keong Cheung said ‘I have set out to create a film that depicts ‘real' characters in a real world. Many of the fighters have no other choice but to fight for the opportunity of a better life. I want the audience to go on a journey with these characters; feel their excitement when they win, but equally the heartbreak when they lose'.
Jim Howell of Park Entertainment commented ‘Chee and his team have already proved to us that they can stage terrific fight sequences but as the shoot has progressed you can see that the film is much more than this. You really start to identify with particular fighters – it could almost be a film version of a new reality show ‘Fighting Idol'! For me the film will definitely crossover.'
Shooting took place on location in Lancashire and London and delivery is timed for December.
